Braganza is to be a Portuguese tune of ‘unknown origin’, although the initial subject of the march is simply a free adaptation of the air ‘O Patria’ which was the Portuguese National Anthem in the 1820s. It is possible that the tune did originate in Germany or Austria, and was taken to Portugal by the Hapsburgs who married into the Royal Family.
